چکیده

The bright star δ Sco has been considered a typical B0-type object for many years. Spectra of the star published prior to 1990 showed no evidence of emission, but only of short-term line profile variations attributed to nonradial pulsations. Speckle interferometric observations show that δ Sco is a binary system with a highlyeccentric orbit and a period of ∼ 10.6 years. Weak emission in the Hα line was detected in its spectrum for the first time during a periastron passage in 1990. Shortly before the next periastron passage in the summer of 2000, the binary entered a strong Hα emission and enhanced mass loss phase. We monitored the spectroscopic development of the Be outburst from July 2000 through March 2001. In this paper we present results from our spectroscopy, refine elements of the binary orbit, and discuss possible mechanisms for the mass loss.

Astrophysics Spectroscopy of the growing circumstellar disk in the δ Scorpii Be binary

We present the results of a spectroscopic monitoring program of the binary system δ Scorpii, whose primary became a Be star after the last periastron encounter in the Summer of 2000. The observations cover a period of 2 years (March 2001– June 2003) and are a continuation of our previous campaign reported in Miroshnichenko et al. (2001). We found that the emission-line spectrum was gradually st...

Multiwavelength monitoring and X-ray brightening of Be X-ray binary PSR J2032+4127/MT91 213 on its approach to periastron

The radio and gamma-ray pulsar PSR J2032+4127 was recently found to be in a decadeslong orbit with the Be star MT91 213, with the pulsar moving rapidly toward periastron. This binary shares many similar characteristics with the previously unique binary system PSR B1259−63/LS 2883. Here we describe radio, X-ray, and optical monitoring of PSR J2032+4127/MT91 213. Our extended orbital phase covera...

Near IR Spectroscopic monitoring of WR 140 during the 2001 periastron passage

We present new spectra of WR 140 (HD 193793) in the JHK bands with some covering the 1.083-μm He i emission line at higher resolution, observed between 2000 October and 2003 May to cover its 2001 periastron passage and maximum collidingwind activity. The WC7 + O4-5 spectroscopic binary WR 140 is the prototype of colliding-wind, episodic dust-making Wolf-Rayet systems which also show strong vari...

Accretion onto the Companion of Eta Carinae during the Spectroscopic Event. v. the Infrared Decline

We propose that the decline in the near-IR flux from the massive binary system η Carinae during the spectroscopic event might be explained by accreted mass that absorbs the radiation from the secondary star, and by that reduces the heating of the dust that is responsible for the near-IR emission. This binary system has an orbital period of 2024 days and eccentricity of e ≃ 0.9. The emission in ...

Stellar Winds in Interaction

WR140 (WC7pd + O5) is often considered to be the archetype of hot, luminous colliding-wind binaries, with strong cyclic high-energy and dust-formation events. The challenge is that this system is quite extreme, with a long period (nearly an integral 7.94 years) and high eccentricity (e = 0.88). Most of the action thus occurs during the relatively short several-month interval of close periastron...
